I have been mulling this over and having a bit of a struggle with this topic. See, I LOVE shopping for presents, but I tend to give perfect, but useful or slightly ordinary presents, not memorable ones. I asked my husband what the best give I ever gave him and he could only even name one, single gift. Ever, In 6 years of marriage, including Christmas, birthdays, anniversaries and the like. Our three weeks of dating, and 4 month engagement did hit any major holidays I was a little annoyed, to say the least. One gift? Out of maybe 25. That is not a track record for super awesome memory making.

But then, I started thinking. Maybe my best gift was to my sister? I could only think of maybe 5 gifts in 30 plus years of gift giving. My parents about the same. So, basically, I suck at gift giving. I excel at things like work gifts and secret santa, but certainly not the big flashy ones. That’s ok with me. My husband, when he gives a gift, is the big gesture guy. I’ll be the practical sock and sweater giver in the family. Besides, I rock at stockings. Even Suzanne, the Christmas Tsar,  would approve, except our must list includes: chapstick, pens, gum and post-it notes.

So, I thought I would do some different perspectives on the “Best Gift I Ever Gave.” A photo essay, if you will. So, here you go, my greatest hits.

Best Homemade Gift: Skittles Vodka, Hands Down

Cheesiest. Possible. Answer. (but also true)

Also a very cheesy answer

Husband's actual answer

Actual Answer

I was going back through ye old photo archives for the wedding picture (oh and by the way, the gift in that one isn’t me, it is the wedding. No one wanted to get married less than me. Well, maybe my sister. We were both married in 2007. Heh.) and I found this picture. This picture is SO many things. It is the last picture taken of me and my mom, taken on her last birthday. My sister and her husband flew in from Michigan and we threw her a birthday luncheon, with her favorite foods and her favorite people. She knew it was her last birthday. All she wanted from me was a cake with 7 minute frosting like her mom made her when she was growing up. And that is what she got. And is, in fact, the best gift I ever gave.

*sniffle* What a sweet memory of your mom.

I can’t think of the best gift I might have given…Hobo Mama has a post this week about best and worst memories and I’ve been mulling that for a few days now. Her post says that best memories tend to be experiences, and not moments, where as worst memories tend to be moments.

I think gifts might be like that too.

Oh the story of your mom’s birthday makes me cry. I can’t imagine how bittersweet it must have been to make that cake. And what a lovely bride you made.

    Also, Skittles vodka WHAT?!

I love the Skittles Vodka, the precious picture of Spencer, but most of all the picture of your mom.
That is so sweet and truly a wonderful gift!

Just for the record, you gave me one of the most memorable birthday gifts I have ever received. No joke.
