Twitter Tips

Since I like to think of myself as the world’s foremost expert on twitter (pretend that is in sarcasm font), I thought I would share a few of the things I have picked up since the last time I proclaimed myself an expert on the subject.

1. If you have a protected/private twitter account and you tweet something, don’t put “please RT” at the end. I’ve been seeing this more and more. Some programs will let you straight retweet it, some (like web twitter) make you copy and paste it and some (like tweet deck) issue a warning. But my issue is this, if you are set to private then theoretically, you don’t want your tweets amplified. Also, people aren’t likely to put in the extra work.

2. This one I just found out because of an incident with a delightful blogger (again with the sarcasm font) who blocked me on twitter. Here’s a tip: if you send someone a nasty mention on twitter and then block them, guess what? They don’t see it. I only saw because someone retweeted it.Way to waste your very valuable time. Ahem.

3. Speaking of getting blocked on twitter, Tweet Old Post (the bot that will auto-tweet your archives) is apparently a touchy subject. Here is my opinion: I think it is a great tool to introduce your twitter followers to your archives. That said, there is a setting in which you can limit what you send out. I don’t get tweeting closed giveaways, it seems like it is baiting your followers in to clicking. I think Tweet Old Post is a much better tool for people who do a lot of tutorials or other non-time-sensitive posts.

Enjoy! And stop annoying me on twitter. Just kidding. Mostly.

I love how delicately you handled that last one. As you know, I TOTALLY AGREE.

It was @PhotoLynda who made the time-sensitive point to me once when we were chatting about it and it was like a lightbulb went off. Mostly tutorials? Good for it. Mostly giveaways/baby updates? Not really appropriate.
