You’re a Mean One Mr Grinch

I love Christmas and I married a grinch, but that is not what this post is about. It’s about the movie, and the book, How the Grinch Stole Christmas. And my movie I mean the Boris Karloff narrated animated classic not the live action abomination. Some of my most favorite childhood memories revolved around the Grinch.

Growing up, my parents had a sliding glass door that we divided painted every year. I’m not sure how the tradition started. I remember being told something about our old house in the valley and everyone painting this awesome winter scene and I ruined it by painting a red tree. And lo, a tradition was born.

Fast forward many, many years and one year my dad decided to paint the scene where the Grinch raises his dog Max on the sled overhead. He was so pleased with himself. And then he told us all that he painted in a little bit of yellow snow, because everyone knows dogs always pee in the snow. He was a kook.

My other most favorite Grinch story is completely unrelated to Christmas. When I was a sophomore in high school, I went to visit a friend of mine for the weekend at a nearby boarding school. (Note: I still think it is odd that I know someone who went to boarding school.) There was a trivia contest that weekend and we kicked ass and I am pretty sure we won, but there was one memorable question that we got wrong. And we got it wrong during the lightening round when the correct answers weren’t given. The question we missed: what was the name of the mountain on which the grinch lived?

Keep in mind this was before the internet. We asked around, but no one knew the correct answer. We had to wait until the next day and go to a bookstore in town to look up the answer. Life was tough before google.

haha. That was an accident, but now I think it’s funny. I meant to put the answer at the bottom.

I am refusing to Google because I keep thinking I’m going to come up with the answer…but it’s going to drive me crazy.

My Ogre was a bit of a Grinch, too – but then we went to Christmas Town in Busch Gardens last year and he actually enjoys the holiday now!!

What a fun tradition to paint your door. It’s too bad you don’t have a photo of the one with yellow snow. ;D
