BlogHer Book Club: You Have No Idea

Can I just say how much I love participating in BlogHer’s book club. The variety is great! I realized while reading this book that I haven’t read many books about celebrities, either biographies or autobiographies. I’m more likely to read something on an historical figure than a movie star. That said, I thoroughly enjoyed You Have No Idea, the celebrity based book by celebrity Vanessa Williams and her no-nonsense mother Helen.

I was pleasantly surprised and thoroughly enjoyed the book. She did include some “shocking revelations,” but mostly I just liked reading the story of a celebrity’s life where I only vaguely remember their rise to fame. I honestly had no clue that she was a trained actress. I remember her Miss America win, scandal and subsequent recording career, but when she started appearing in acting roles, I (erroneously) assumed she was a model/singer turned actress.

Without giving too much away, the book updates the rest of her life, professional and personal, until the present day and her current work on the final season of Desperate Housewives. I follow pop culture in as much as I read some shows, read some blogs and subscribe to entertainment weekly. I consider myself a generalized aficionado. This book is great; a breezy (for the most part) read with enough insider information to make the famous part engrossing and personal struggles that keep the pages turning.

I’ve had some questions about BlogHer Book Club and thought I would answer them here. You do not need to be running BlogHer ads to particpate. I’m not. You are provided the book and compensated for reading the book, writing the post, spreading the word via social media and participating in discussions on the BlogHer site. You are not required to like the book, but you are required to finish it. More information about the book club can be found here and a sample discussion page is here.

This is a paid review for BlogHer Book Club but the opinions expressed are my own.

When do you find time to read? I have a goal to read two non-parenting-related books in 2012… is that bad?

I think that is a great goal. The easiest answer is that I read after Spencer goes to bed, but that is not entirely the case. The kindle really did change my reading life. I can read in cars (paper or electronically), so I get a decent amount of reading done on car trips when my husband drives. I use the kindle app on my phone to read when Spencer is playing independently or sometimes I read physical books then. He doesn’t really care if I am actually watching Toy Story with him as long as I am sitting by him on the couch.

I think I need to train myself to give up on accomplishing stuff at a certain time of night, and head to bed with a good book. The car would make me sick, and trying to read with Kai around is hopeless… unless he’s holding the book and it has lots of pictures.

Great review! I am the opposite of you I would rather pick up a celebrity autobiography than an historical one. haha.

Glad doing this book review led me to your site! And I do the same, read once the kid goes to bed for the most part, or on the Kindle app when he is occupied. :)
