Classic Cocktails: Greyhounds and Salty Dogs

This weeks edition of Friday Happy Hour is a look at a pair of classic cocktails Рthe greyhound and salty dog. The greyhound {a happy and refreshing mix of grapefruit juice and vodka} was the first cocktail I adored. Although, as a warning, greyhounds made in a dive bar with well vodka and canned grapefruit juice can mess. you. up. The vodka is nearly impossible to taste.

I like a slightly more dignified version now. Fresh grapefruit juice – or at least the fancy bottled stuff – cut with some club soda and much higher quality vodka than those early days. And honestly, I don’t know why this drink isn’t more popular. It’s very screwdriver adjacent, let’s get these guys back on some brunch menus. The greyhound’s delightful saline cousin is a salty dog, just a greyhound with a salted rim.

I like to make these in pairs, but the volumes will depend a bit on the size of your glasses and whether or not you pour over ice.

Greyhound/Salty Dog

  • 1/3 cup graprefruit juice
  • 1/3 cup club soda (mine was a little flat and it tasted fine, so I’m thinking cutting with just water would work too)
  • 2 ounces vodka
  • ice
  1. Pour juice, club soda and vodka into a 1+ cup measuring cup.
  2. Add ice and stir.
  3. I just put a the spoon over the pour spout of the measuring cup to keep the ice in and pour in to the glasses.
  4. You could also make these in a cocktail shaker or just pour everything in the glass and stir.
  5. To turn your greyhound in to a salty dog, just salt the rim margarita style. {I just wet the rim with a little juice and my (clean) finger and then dip the glass into some salt on a plate*.}
  6. CHEERS!
*Note: do this BEFORE putting the drink in the glass.

  1. WHY HAVE I NEVER HEARD OF THIS DRINK?!?! It combines my favorite alcohol with my favorite citrus beverage! (I, for instance, am not a fan of the popular mimosa. Orange juice? Meh. But give me champagne and grapefruit juice and I will knock out a whole bottle. Does that have a name? Probably. I should Google.) Now I need to make room in my freezer for some vodka, and go buy some grapefruit juice. YUMMY.
