Going Off Menu

There are few things in life (as far as retail/consumer experiences go) that I hate as much as ordering off menu. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t care if you do. I just rarely, if ever, do. I’ve never ordered anything at In & Out animal style or had a 4 by 4. I’ve never asked for the secret gummi bear mix-ins at Jamba or the random concoctions at Starbucks. This goes back as far as when the secret menus were still secret, in the dark days before the internet.

I have no idea why I was thinking about this today. It dates to before my years in food service, so I don’t think it is out of pity for the employees and most places like in & out it isn’t really an inconvenience. They pride themselves on their (not so secret) menu. And really this is no real issue for me. I just can’t get it out of my brain.

I guess part of it stems from thinking about the seasonal coffee drinks at Starbucks. I don’t really like any of them Fall* or Winter. I do like the peppermint latte at Coffebean, but I don’t think Starbucks has one. Huh. That is why i was thinking about this. I bet they would make one. It must just be peppermint syrup in a latte, but I don’t want to ask. WHAT IF THEY SAID NO???

So. Does anyone know if they can make this?

*I’ve never actually had a pumpkin spice latte. I assume I won’t like it. Does it have nutmeg or allspice? I hate those flavors.

  1. I can pretty much guarantee you wouldn’t like the pumpkin spice latte if you don’t like those flavors.

I have ordered things not on the menu. They really have never even batted an eye at me. As long as you aren’t that crazy lady ordering a twice-cooled, double-steamed half-caf mocha-latte-frappa-whatever WITH ROOM BUT ONLY A LITTLE … as long as you aren’t ordering that, I think you’re good.

It’s more that I just don’t want to. I feel like if they *wanted* me to order it, it would be on the menu. They being some mysterious other, of course.

  2. Starbucks DOES have a peppermint drink during the holidays (I don’t like peppermint really but I know they have it lol). The PSL is more… cinnamon to me than nutmeg.

They do, but as far as I remember, they are only peppermint chocolate drinks (peppermint mocha and peppermint hot chocolate) and Starbuck’s chocolate drinks are way too sweet for me.

Starbucks will happily make you a peppermint latte, but they don’t carry the peppermint syrup until the peppermint mocha comes into season. Then you can get peppermint hits in whatever you want, until they run out of the syrup. I’m a peppermint junkie, but prefer peppermint vanilla. I order off menu peppermint shiz every winter at Sbux, authority, right here! Also, I get the “grilled cheese” at In-n-out (it’s just a cheeseburger w/o meat). I guess I am an off-menu orderer, or secret menu, or whatever, but I never feel funny or fancy about it. I am probably annoying and don’t even know it! xo

I just never go to in & out because I don’t like the fries. I have veg friends who swore by the grilled cheese.

This made me laugh! When we went to San Diego this summer for vacation, my husband was all over the secret menus… I’d never heard of secret menus, but I kept making fun of him because how is it secret if you can look it up on the Internet? Weird…
