Just Finished: Here I Go Again {BlogHer Book Club}

I just finished Jen Lancaster’s Here I Go Again and I can say in all honesty that I loved it. I know this is BlogHer Book Club/sponsored, but liking the book it not a requirement.  It’s fun. It’s breezy and would be a great vacation or airplane read. In all honesty, I don’t read her blogs and I haven’t read her other books, so I don’t know how it compares.

I saw a review on amazon that likened Here I Go Again that summed it up thusly: like a cross between Mean Girls and Peggy Sue Got Married. The reviewer means it as an insult, but I think it sums up why I like it. I mean, the concepts of time travel and horribl high school girls aren’t necissarily the most underutiilzed concepts in fiction, but I think she puts a decent spin on them. I didn’t guess the ending from 50 pages in.

I also loved the pop culture references in Here I Go Again as they are mostly the same as my touchstones. I graduated high school the same year as the protaganist. I wasnt’ popular by any means, but the tv and music references were all ones I relate to. Although, I would take issue with the indication that people thought Patrick Dempsey was attractive at the time of Can’t Buy Me Love’s release. Most people were plesantly surprised when he turned up McDreamily on Grey’s Anatomy years later. Overall, though, I found Jen Lancaster to be a charming, if slightly obviously acerbic, author and will look for some of her other books.

Here I Go Again is a good book, entertaining and a quick read. Because it is on the fluffier side of the fiction spectrum, dare I call it “chick lit,” maybe get it from the library or wait for paperback. Or share it with lots of friends. I like to spend hardback money on re-readers.

This is a paid review for BlogHer Book Club but the opinions expressed are my own.

    I’ve read a bunch of her books; “Bitter is the New Black” had me crying I was laughing so hard at parts of it. You might pick up, “If You Were Here,” which is a John Hughes love fest.

    I need something light and fluffy to read these days, I think I shall pick this one up.
