Breakfast in the Car, the story of my life {sponsored post}

I am not a morning person. As a child I wasn’t much of one either. I stayed in bed as long as humanly possible every morning, and shoved breakfast in my face while walking to the school bus. Since I am old and this was before instant and portable breakfast creations, I ate dry cereal, frozen burritos (heated up) and leftover pancakes on my short walk. We were not allowed to eat on the bus, so I always had to make sure I finished and then stick any leftovers in to my lunch box for later.

Well, with Spencer, the apple does not fall far from the tree. Most school days, he eats his breakfast in the car. He likes random stuff for breakfast: string cheese, pretzels, crackers, yogurt (I don’t allow yogurt in the car. Spencer must eat that one before hand, normally when I am putting on his socks.) and the handiest of all breakfasts – cereal bars.

On non school days, our breakfast routine is much more relaxed. Often it includes yogurt, cereal, hard boiled eggs (no yolks, god forbid I try and make the toddler eat a yolk) and yes, still cereal bars. Strawberry is his favorite. I like blueberry. There are so many flavors it can be hard to choose which to get. You can see all of the flavors my local Vons store had in my google+ album. Spoiler alert!  I bought strawberry and blueberry even though there are a wide assortment of flavors, I know better than to rock the toddler boat.


If you are looking to stock up on car breakfast supplies, Safeway affilate stores (Safeway, Vons, Pavilions, Tom Thumb, Randalls, Genuardi’s or Dominicks) are currently running a buy 4 save $4 campaign. Be sure and use your club card and look for signage indicating participating products. This is a great way to stock up on some breakfast items and get a big savings.

I am so very pleased to be a Smart & Final California Milk Advisory Board Ambassador. I love Smart & Final, which for those readers not in Southern California, is a chain of non-membership warehouse style grocery stores with great prices and they recently got rid of the club card component and just give the savings to all shoppers, making the whole shopping experience even more convenient.

Smart & Final is partnering with the California Milk Advisory Board for the “Help Our Teachers, Help Our Kids” promotion. This is a great campaign in which the students and teachers collect Real California labels from Smart & Final’s First Street brand diary products.  Making teacher gifts with an eligible dairy product is a great was to honor our teachers and thank them for all of their hard work and support schools by collecting seals at the same time.

I unearthed an old recipe of my mom’s and reduced the sugar a smidge to make it more of a shortbread than a butter cookie. Then, I decorated a plate and packaged up the cookies.


Butter Shortbread Cookies
makes 2 dozen
1 cup butter, room temperature
1/2 cup granulated sugar
2 cups all purpose flour
additional sugar or sprinkles for tops (I used citrus sugar, but any old sugar will do)

  1. Preheat oven to 35o (F)
  2. In a stand mixer (or using an electric hand mixer), beat butter and sugar on medium-high until fluffy
  3. Mixing on the lowest speed, slowly incorporate flour 1/4 cup at a time.
  4. Dough should form a soft ball.
  5. Roll dough into small balls, about the size of a walnut. (If dough is too crumbly, chill for 30 minutes)
  6. Pour additional sugar onto a shallow dish or plate and press into sugar with the bottom of a glass to flatten ball into disc shape.
  7. Place discs on parchment lined cookie sheet an inch apart.
  8. Bake for about 15 minutes, switching cookies sheets halfway through. I normally start checking every 2 minutes at 12 minutes. The top of the cookie should be slightly golden and the bottoms should be a light golden brown.
  9. Cool on pans for a few minutes and then transfer to racks to cool completely.
  10. Store in an airtight container for up to a week.


To make the plate:
Small paper plate (I used a 6 inch plate. If you use a bigger plate, just neatly cut the top off a gallon ziptop bag)
Sandwich bag (not ziptop)
Snowflake craft punch (or other shape)
Contrasting paper
Coordinating ribbon
White or super glue

  1. Punch 4 evenly spaced shapes into the paper plate
  2. Punch 4 shaped from the contrasting paper
  3. Glue the colored shapes between the snowflake holes
  4. Let dry for as long as the glue needs (about a minute for crazy glue, an hour for white glue)
  5. Place cookies in bag, gather top and push through hole at top of plate
  6. Tie a bit of ribbon at the top of the bag
  7. Attach a gift tag or write a simple to/from on the back of the plate.
