Butterscotch Vodka

Sunday, November 18th, 2012

I love giving flavored/infused liquor as gifts. Skittles vodka and grapefruit gin are two of my previous favorites. I was trying to think of something fun to do this year that would work for any fall or winter holiday (peppermint/candy cane vodka just seems so christmasy) and I thought I’d try out butterscotch. This might be one of the easiest flavored liquors I’ve ever done. No straining, no stirring, no fuss. And a super added bonus is that it is done in about 4 hours, so the wait time inherent in the fruit infused vodkas is eliminated. Yay!

To buy: 750 mL bottle of decent but not spectacular vodka & two 10.5 ounce packages of butterscotch discs (about a little +/- isn’t going to make or break anything. You will use all of the candies, but not all of the vodka

To make: Unwrap candies and place in an 8 cup measuring cup. Add vodka until the mixture totals 4 cups. Let sit for about 4 hours (until all of the candy dissolves), stirring about once an hour. Then give it one more stir and pour it in to a container that closes tightly for storage or gifting.

So. The butterscotch vodka is made – now what? It is delicious straight up and chilled.

  • use a small glass and serve as an aperitif before a holiday meal
  • use a martini glass and call it a butterscotch martini for a cocktail party, maybe even rim the glass with crushed candy.
  • place it in a decorative bottle (that seals tightly) add a cute tag and give it as a gift (super cute hostess gift for Thanksgiving)
  • splash some over vanilla ice cream or apple pie
  • make a grown-up milkshake
  • I’m still trying to figure out how to use it in a hot buttered rum style drink or maybe in cider? The potential for a hot drink seems to be there, but I haven’t had a chance to try it yet. I would think it could be used similarly to butterscotch schnapps.

CHEERS!
