Miss Red

Friday, November 20th, 2015

The kids love Taylor Swift and listening to her music in the car keeps the peace when Spencer misses the bus to school and we have to do the 12 mile trip.  However, he seemed to have inherited my faulty song lyric gene which has led to some fun little mix-ups. Also, some Taylor Swift lyrics have led to some really random questions for a six year old.

  • Do boys really only want love if it’s torture? Thanks Blank Space! Although I did get to give a lesson in hyperbole.
  • Does she really see everything in red? Like laser eyes? The song Red allows one to give a lesson in both simile AND metaphor.
  • What is a period? This one is my own fault. In letting the boys have free reign on youtube, Taylor Swift videos led to Taylor Swift parody videos. The Bad Blood ones are especially crass and sexist, because of course an angry song written by a woman with blood in the title means she was angry because she was on her period. Poor Taylor Swift, being held back by her uterus again…
  • What is an underminer? How do you mine unders? Again, this one is my fault. I am unable to resist commenting on the song Mean whenever my husband is in the care and I think I always say the same exact thing: “the fact she calls the subject names at the end (a liar and pathetic) undermines the entire anti-bullying message of the song. ” I explained what I had meant to Spencer and he, the staunchest of Swift defenders, shot me down with an eloquent “DOES NOT.”

Misheard lyrics-

I have forgotten a few of these, but my two favorites are in Blank Space and Red. With Blank Space, there was that whole thing where people misheard the “I’ve got a long list of ex-lovers” as “all the lonely Starbucks lovers.” Spencer? heard it as Starbusrt lovers. I read an article at the time about how your brain turns words you hear in to words you know, so I guess in Spencer’s case; he prefers candy to coffee.

And then my favorite. In Red, there is a line in the chorus that is “losing him was blue like I’ve never known” and then the next line is about grey and then there is the red part. So, colors are an obvious theme. Spencer’s lyric is “losing him was rude like you never know” which is hysterical. Plus he belts this part of the song with some serious volume. He calls it his power part.

That kid makes me laugh in the very best way.

Busy Weekend

Sunday, November 15th, 2015

We had a busy weekend- travel to the land of stores, railroad museum and lots of chores and gardening. Fun stuff, but not really fantastic blog fodder. Plus the events of the weekend in Paris and Beirut have made me less inclined to prattle on about silly and minor things. At least for today.

If you missed it, here is a nice article about the #peaceforparis Eiffel Tower/Peace sign symbol that went viral.
