OXO Tot and Toddler Feeding (A Review)

Friday, August 14th, 2015

I have long loved the OXO brand, my mom bought OXO and I even remember the Good Grips line coming out in the 90s. Besides the (Did you know that the founder came up with the good grips line after noticing the trouble his arthritic wife had with regular kitchen implements), OXO has long been known for quality. The OXO Tot line is no exception.

OXO tot divided plate review

The plate has a center hole for dip! Truman is a master dipper.

I was asked to review a “staycation” set of products, and since, aside from a few weekend trips, we had no major summer plans; it worked out perfectly. The products included the OXO tot grape cutter, Roll Up Bib, the divided plate and the Sit Right potty seat. I didn’t test the potty seat because we aren’t quite there yet, but it looks like a nice one. Much better than the random Dora one Spencer picked out a few years ago.

Truman love love loves the grape slicer. He wanted to use it and I said no because 1 1/2 and blades isn’t a great combo. I let Spencer try it out though; “works great. Nice slicing action,” was his enthusiastic, yet taciturn review. He claims sliced grapes taste better too. He might be right. I am normally not the biggest fan of single use kitchen items (I’m with Alton on this one), but this one really is great at what it does. Knocked out a whole serving of grapes significantly faster than slicing them with a knife. You can do two at a time, also. Cherry tomatoes worked pretty well, but there was some smooshing of the super ripe ones. The OXO tot grape slicer would make a super uniform fresh salsa, too.

The OXO tot divided plate is a nice little plate. It is super cute (priorities!), has a non-skid bottom and is divided to suggest the proper portion sizes of protein, grain and fruits/veggies. I think those proper portion sizes can be best left to personal preference so one could also say that the plate is divided in to big, medium, medium, tiny round dip section! Built in dip is genius. Truman loves dipping and the center spot helps keep it a little more… contained. I also like that the rim on the edge helps guide Truman as he navigates this new crazy world of silverware.

To be honest, Truman isn’t the biggest fan of bibs. He will tolerate one for about 30 seconds and then rip it off, even from the very beginning at 6 months. We mostly just take of his shirt for wet/staining foods. It’s not always pretty, but it works. That said, Truman left this bib on for almost 15 minutes. New world record goes to team OXO tot! I think he liked the pocket. He kept trying to stick food in there on purpose. It washes up great and still looks brand new after more then a few attempts/uses. It rolls-up and secures for travel (hence the Roll Up(TM) Bib name) so I think this will stay in the car for when we get caught out and forced to let him eat in cute clothes.

Bib status: ON!

Overall, I am quite pleased with my introduction to the OXO tot line (did you know the company was named OXO because it is the same backwards/forwards/up&down? I am a veritable font of OXO trivia). High quality, I love the green and white color scheme, the packaging is amazingly easy to open, Truman is a fan. All important things. I will definitely be checking out their line of sippy and straw cups as the next stop on my seemingly never-ending quest for the perfect toddler cup.

G.H. Cretors Popcorn Review

Friday, July 17th, 2015

Popcorn is by far my favorite snack food. I either make my own brown bag style or buy the pre-popped kind in a bag. When G.H. Cretors asked if I would like to review some samples I accepted their offer, delighted. Imagine my surprise when the “samples” arrived – 5 full sized bags in 5 different amazing flavors. Unfortunately, the rest of the family saw the box and I had to share. UGH.

GH Cretors Popcorn: Caramel. Cheese, Chicago Style, Olive Oil, Lightly Salted

There was only 1 unopened bag left at the end of a week. Husband – fan Me – fan Baby – superfan Kiddo – decided he no longer liked popcorn and refused to try any (aka was an almost 6 year old)

Confession: I had never had chicago style popcorn. I had seen cheese and caramel mixed in bags before and thought it looked weird and despite being Chicago-born (but not raised) and a fairly adventurous eater, I never tried it; sounded way too weird. So, I opened the caramel corn first.

So. Much. Caramel. Goodness.

It was delicious. So delicious I considered hiding the bag from my family and all of the bags of G.H. Cretors, if only I had an empty cupboard to stash it in. But I relented and shared.

Everyone loved it! Truman cried when I put it away. In retrospect, I’m not entirely sure why I wasted any on a toddler in the first place. He’s an enthusiastic fan of G.H. Creators  popcorn, though. Carmel corn – loved it. Cheese flavored – loved it. Plain – loved it. Chicago Style – clapped his hands with glee and repeated one of his favorite words over and over again – more! more! more!

So about that Chicago Mix – it’s delicious. A definite would buy with my own money. AND I found it at a local store, so I know it’s out there. G.H. Creators is available nationally and there is a store locator on their website. Amazon has it too!

I kept back one unopened bag for after I finish my July Whole30. I am very excited about it. To be honest, I actually had a dream about the Chicago Mix the other night – it’s that captivating. AND it is the one flavor available in my dinko town of 3000 people so I am sure there is some available near just about everyone. Go get some today!

COOLIT makes dinner time easier!

Monday, March 23rd, 2015

Have you ever finished making dinner, plated the whole thing, corralled everyone to the table in record time, actually had a still hot meal and looked over at your baby and realized everything was too hot for the baby to eat? It’s a nightmare. Then you have to get up and find some fruit or crackers and hope to pacify the baby until the food is safe. Or – what I invariably used to do – cut the pieces of the meal smaller and smaller, hoping that by exposing more and more of the food to air, the food will cool more quickly.

Nothing works. Truman is always annoyed.

Enter COOLIT – an ingenious food cooling dish designed to save time for busy parents.

COOLIT  COOLIT is a blue dish that you keep in the freezer (or put it in at least 3 hours before you need it) and then you put hot food on the dish, stir a few times and it is cooled to perfect eating temperature in just a minute.

COOLIT pasta

I tried it out with all sorts of things: pasta, oatmeal, more pasta, smoked gouda mac and cheese (sometimes I get creative!) even our St Patrick’s Day feast of corned beef, cabbage and potatoes.

COOLIT St Paddys

A COOLIT would make a great gift for the mom-who-has-everything shower or a care package for busy working parent about to head back to work.  COOLIT was developed by parents for parents and is a powerhouse time saver at mealtime.

Boden Activewear Yay!

Thursday, November 13th, 2014

My original title for this post was “Boden Activewear – not just for the young and skinny,” but it seemed sort of mean and I didn’t want to implicate Boden in what is clearly my mental hangup. I love Boden. I think their clothes hold up well, wash great and the kids love them. The key word in that last sentence is kids. I’ve actually only owned miniBoden. When their rep contacted me (sponosred post alert!) about trying out their new activewear/yoga line I was excited. But…

Would they fit? That’s the question. The email noted that size range was 2-14. I am a 14, most of the time. Sometimes 16, rarely a 12. I have one pair of pants that’s an 18 but that’s because I hate jeans that are too tight. I emailed back and said I would love to try them, but I didn’t know if they would fit because I was right at the top of the size range. And then I waited.

My new bff the Boden PR rep emailed back and said they run wide but not long and are super stretchy so would probably work.

Now I just had to wait for the package to arrive,

And then the package came.

And it fit

All of it fit

I have been wearing them constantly. The tank and pants fit great and the jacket is a little tight in the sleeves, but I have giant ham hock arms. I’ve had to size up 2 sizes to get fitted sleeves in a blazer to fit and that was long before I had baby weight to lose.

Right now, the line comes in navy, red and black. The navy pieces I received have a coordinated pattern with just enough on each piece so you don’t feel overwhelmed with print or too matchy matchy. It’s too cold right now, but I can see the tank and jacket combo becoming a walk to the bus stop stable when the warm weather comes back in the Spring.

The activewear pieces from Boden are a nice and thick quality fabric and are super comfy. Right now, the whole #bodenonthego line can be ordered with free shipping and returns so if you concerned about fit, don’t be scared to order. Also, I just noticed online that most of the pieces go up to 18! That’s awesome.

Boden Yoga Clothes

I know it’s hard to try new things when you are a borderline size. I tend to stick with the brands I know run large or will fit for sure, especially when ordering online, but give Boden a try.

Boden Yoga

I also would like to mention my appreciation for Boden and that they didn’t back out of sending samples to someone at the higher end of the sizing. My photos aren’t an amazing size 2 yoga shoot. I did take some, but I mostly work out at home and they are sort of boring.  I went to retake them today and it started drizzling and gave up. #realtalk

The clothes are fantastic. I just don’t feel that comfortable out and about in them. I am more of a huge shirt and baggy sweats sort of work out person. My hope is that this will serve as some sort of before photo and get me off my butt and motivated to lose the weight. Then, in the Spring, I can buy myself a whole new set of Boden activewear in a smaller size and show it off.
