Teething at Three Months

Thursday, May 15th, 2014

Truman seems to be getting a tooth or three or maybe four. I didn’t even know that was possible at three months (related: three months old tomorrow, holy crap!) but it turns out after some extensive internet research, aka reading comments in instagram, it is way more common than I thought. He is still a pretty jolly little guy, but he went from 95% happy all the time all the way down to maybe 80% of the time.

This is blurry because he was bouncing the bouncy chair with his feet, but I find his cold washcloth chomping face to be adorable.

When he isn’t teething, I keep him busy folding the laundry.

Now I have to say he is mostly all smiles instead of all smiles. It’s slipping a little in the bottom right.

Out with the Old

Monday, May 5th, 2014

2014 is shaping up to be a year of many changes. We added a Truman, sold out house, moved to a whole new city/region of California and then this weekend I finally got a new car.  We had to drive a few (hundred) miles to get what we wanted and take both kids to a car dealer ship, but in the end everything worked out. And I got to go Target! Woohoo!

Dealing with both kids in the dealership went something sort of like this Spencer played ipad until the battery ran out, then he played the other ipad, then for a while he was playing simultaneous games of plants vs zombies on my phone and ipad at the same time. He briefly went around asking all of the employees why they had a lego table but no legos*, but he was shockingly polite about it. As for Truman we just went with the feed the baby until he falls asleep, rinse and repeat method. He’s a pretty mellow baby though. If he isn’t hungry or poopy, as long as he can see a family member he’ll be pretty chill.

Overall the move transition has been ok. I think we’d be doing a little more exploring if Spencer didn’t have a tendency to bolt. I am a little terrified to take the baby and Spencer somewhere new. What if he runs? He is way faster than I am even without the ergo or stroller. What if I need to change the baby and Spencer won’t come with or throws a huge fit? The lack of structure with moving and leaving preschool has resulted in some behavioral challenges that I don’t know how to fix.

And yet, he was 90% good at the car dealership, so maybe there is hope.

*Not an unreasonable question.

Easter 2014

Tuesday, April 22nd, 2014

This was my second year hosting my in-laws for Easter and the first in our new town. Like last Christmas, I was up early and everybody else slept in. Well, my father-in-law got but to go fishing. At least I had Truman to keep me company. So I played dress up. I don’t think he minded.

Once people got up, Easter was tons of fun! Baskets and eggs were hidden and found. Ham was eaten, deviled eggs were admired and devoured. Candy was put away to be doled out at the rate of two per day. I forced everyone to take a self timer family portrait. Good times all around.

I did discover that I think Easter might be one of my favorite instagram holidays. All the kids were so cute in their dress up clothes, running around outside. Straw hats! Bow ties! Bunny ears! Hope all the celebrated Easter had a great day!

Peeps Pops for Easter #Peepsonality

Spencer really wanted to help with this project. See?

Because Spencer was helping, the project morphed from super cute basket to awe and amaze children to a project that a kid can help with, which isn’t such a bad thing. The baby was taking a nap so spencer and I got to hang out alone together and honestly he doesn’t care too much what his easter basket looks like. just what is inside. That led to another tiny problem as I didn’t completely want to spoil the Easter Bunny for him yet. I ended up using some of the treats Peeps so generously sent me, but held back what I wanted to put in his basket on Easter morning. And maybe also the ones I accidentally ate already aren’t pictures. Did you know they come in PARTY CAKE flavor now. They were delicious; I regret nothing.

  Peeps Pops

I told Spencer we were making a practice basket to make sure there was room for everything and he decided to make Peeps Pops for decoration, luckily I had some bamboo skewers on hand (cake pop sticks would also work). The “technical” part of this project is pretty straight forward: take peep, poke with stick. I did cut the Peeps apart first. This would also be cute with the chocolate dipped ones and those would have cleaner sides as they come individually portioned. Spencer was adamant that those be IN the basket not ON a stick though. He really took this project and ran with it.

The Peeps pops could also be individually wrapped for party favors or just to keep the cut edges fresh overnight. Personally, I prefer a slightly stale Peep; I love the crunch. I used press-n-seal instead of cellophane wrap and it looks way cuter in person than it photographs, plus it puts a nice seal on the cut edges.  Spencer was also practicing his bow tying.

Wrapped Peeps Pops Easter

Peeps has all sorts of new products that are new this season including Chocolate Dipped Mousse Flavored Marshmallow Chicks, and Chocolate Mousse Flavored Marshmallow Bunnies. I will admit to being skeptical about the chocolate mousse flavor because I normally don’t like chocolate flavored non-chocolate items, but these are really good. And somehow they do indeed taste more like a chocolate mousse than a straight chocolate flavor. Delicious!

Peeps on a Stick

He wanted to be in all the photos and would pop up behind the basket!

Easter is coming up fast and this year is a bit of a change for me. Normally I would run out to Target on Friday or Saturday and come back ready for basket filling and egg stuffing. This year? No Target. In an effort to plan ahead, I mail ordered some legos and Angry Birds stuff and… Spencer found it. Of course. So, I am going to try and put a basket together between a drug store and a grocery store and see how it goes. At least I know I will have Peeps! And if you are running behind, try making some Peeps Pops. So quick and easy that a 4 year old could do it (and did!).

Disclosure: Peeps sent me Peeps to sample and make something for a post. I was not provided monetary compensation. I am totally willing to just work for candy. NO REGRETS!
