Happy Halloween + More Vintage Amy

Monday, October 31st, 2011

Happy Halloween! I searched and searched for a picture of my most favorite costume: pumpkin made my mom (my dad had a matching one). I was only able to find an unfortunate picture of me in his costume in high school. So, instead I present Angel Amy.

Kindergarten. I think

I would just like to note: that is a wig. We had one “dress up” wig, I wore it for more than one costume. I know it was my witch hair, too. I’ve been trying to think of all of the things I dressed up as and really could only remember: bee, mighty mouse, angel, witch (twice), pumpkin, french maid, scarecrow, princess. I don’t think I ever had a purchased character costume.

I’m pretty excited about tonight. Going to take Spencer to his school party/trunk or treat and then to his grandparents and maybe trick or treat a few neighborhood houses. He doesn’t quite get the whole process, but he sure likes knocking on doors.

On a side note, what the hell is up with the rogue trick or treaters this year? I understand having parties or events the weekend before, but unless your neighborhood officially designates it, there should be no trick or treating except for Halloween. Period. I had kids show up at my door on Saturday which I find to be unacceptable. And I bet those same kids are going to show up again tonight.

Vintage Halloween Hop

I had some trouble finding cute pictures for this. The ones I was thinking of were not in the box I thought they were and growing up before the digital age can make for slim pickings. Some were too dark, some were weird and one was mildly offensive. So, I bring you the year we were super heroes. Twice.

Our town had a costume 4th of July parade that, as girl scouts, my sister and I participated in every year. Depending on the theme, my mom would make us re-purpose the costumes for Halloween. Luckily, one year the theme was Super Heroes. I’m not sure why I was Mighty Mouse, but I do remember that my sister (and I) loved Wonder Woman. We both had the bathing suits. I love that she posed with her bracelets at the ready. Confession time: I know the Lasso of Truth, but did the bracelets have a name? I just remember her using them to boing away (technical term) bullets.

Be sure and check out Bebehblog’s post and link up your own Halloween post! It can be words or a picture. We don’t discriminate. And if you’re on twitter, tag your posts #VintageHalloween to make them easier to find. Yay!

Flashback Friday – Mom!

Friday, February 4th, 2011

It is my mom’s birthday tomorrow. I thought I would share some photos from the 60s that my cousins sent me when they cleaned out my grandmother’s house. I had never seen most of these before that envelope of awesome arrived. Because it was my dad’s mother’s house, most of the pictures were of him, but there were a ton of pictures from right after his wedding up until he went to Vietnam, which puts most of these 1968-1970.

This picture cracks me up because we had the ship painting, the picasso print and those encyclopedias in our house my whole life.

They took a trip to Washington DC in the spring on 1969. I love how fancy they look for sightseeing. These days we would just be in jeans and T-shirts.

I adore shift dresses. She’s so cute!

This is from what was known in my family as the Big Mama Frizz era, also known as the early 70s. I think that is my sister in the picture which means I wasn’t even a glimmer yet.

I loved this kind of lawn chairs when I was a kid and how they made the weird pattern on the backs of my thighs.  I never see them anymore. People all seem to have wooden chairs or the smooth fabric ones.

This is by far my favorite of the bunch! I love it. So many vintage photos seem posed and this is such a candid and she looks so happy. By the hair, I am guessing this is right after their wedding in 1968.

When I think of my parents from my childhood, this is what they look like. I think it is from Yosemite, which would put this at 1983.

Happy Birthday Mom!
