Easy and Delicious Chicken Parmesan Sandwich Recipe

Whether you’re feeding a crowd or just treating yourself, these Chicken Parmesan Sandwich recipe is sure to satisfy. Transform it into a crowd-pleasing sandwich that’ll have everyone asking for seconds. This recipe offers two fantastic options: individual subs for a classic approach or a party-sized sandwich that’s perfect for gatherings.

The secret to these sandwiches lies in the perfect balance of textures. We start with a crispy, flavorful chicken cutlet, nestle it in a bed of tangy tomato sauce, and top it with gooey melted mozzarella. All of this goodness is contained within your choice of bread – either individual hoagie rolls or a large ciabatta loaf for sharing.

What sets these sandwiches apart is the attention to detail. We toast the bread to provide a sturdy base that can stand up to the saucy filling. Then, we layer on the ingredients strategically to ensure every bite is packed with flavor. A final trip under the broiler gives these sandwiches their signature bubbly, golden-brown cheese topping.

Ingredients

  • 1 large loaf ciabatta (for a party-size sandwich) or six 8- or 10-inch hoagie rolls (for individual subs)
  • Extra-virgin olive oil, for drizzling
  • 1 1/2 cups red sauce (see notes)
  • 1 batch Chicken Parmesan, fully cooked and warmed through
  • 6 ounces shredded mozzarella cheese

Directions

  1. Position your oven rack 8 inches below the heat source and preheat the broiler to high. Place your chosen bread cut-side-up on a foil-lined rimmed baking sheet. Drizzle the bread lightly with olive oil, then broil until it’s well browned and crisp, about 1 minute. Keep a close eye on it to prevent burning!
  2. Transfer the top portion of the bread to a large cutting board. Spread the bottom portion generously with extra sauce. Now, it’s time to assemble!

For the party-size sandwich: Arrange the chicken cutlets on the bottom bread in a single layer, slightly overlapping to cover the entire surface. The cutlets should already have sauce and some cheese on them from your original chicken parmesan recipe. Top with additional cheese for extra gooeyness.

For individual subs: If needed, cut the chicken cutlets in half lengthwise to fit the bread. Place about one cutlet per sandwich, then top with extra cheese.

  3. Return your creation to the broiler and cook until the cheese is fully melted, bubbling, and starting to brown in spots. This should take about 2 minutes, but watch carefully to avoid burning. Once it’s achieved cheesy perfection, remove from the oven and immediately close the sandwich, pressing down firmly to seal all those delicious flavors inside.

For an authentic Italian deli experience, wrap the sandwich tightly in foil and let it steam for 5 minutes before serving. This allows the flavors to meld and the bread to soften slightly.

If you’ve made the party-size sandwich, slice it into 6 to 8 single-serving pieces before presenting it to your eager guests.

Notes

For the red sauce, you have options! Use your favorite homemade recipe or reach for a jar of high-quality store-bought sauce (we recommend looking for one with simple, natural ingredients for the best flavor).

  • Make it Your Own: Feel free to customize these sandwiches to suit your taste. Add some fresh basil leaves for a burst of herbal flavor, or sprinkle on some red pepper flakes if you like a bit of heat. For a veggie boost, consider adding some sautéed bell peppers or mushrooms.
  • Leftover Love: If you find yourself with leftover sandwiches (though that’s rare!), they can be gently reheated in a 350°F oven. Wrap them in foil to prevent drying out, and heat for about 10-15 minutes until warmed through.
